Biography

Nigel Patrick was an English actor and stage director who began in repertory before his first professional stage appearance in 1932 in The Life Machine. Born in London into a theatrical family, he had a long run in George and Margaret. In British films of the late 1940s and 1950s he built a reputation as a debonair leading man, though he could also portray rogues. He appeared as a test pilot in The Sound Barrier (1952), and exhibitors ranked him the seventh most popular British film star that year. He played the young teacher in The Browning Version (1951) and acted in Sapphire (1959), which won Best British Film at the 1960 BAFTA awards. He directed and starred in How to Murder a Rich Uncle (1957) and appeared in The League of Gentlemen (1960) and Battle of Britain (1969). On stage he directed Relatively Speaking in 1967, and television work included Zero One from 1962 to 1965.

Nigel Patrick's professional stage debut came in 1932, in The Life Machine at the Regent Theatre in Kings Cross, London, after he had spent time in repertory.
First role
Patrick made his film debut playing a reporter in a supporting romantic part in Mrs. Pym of Scotland Yard. The movie was shot in July 1939 and came out the next year.
