Plot summary

Sir Robert Chiltern holds a seat in Parliament and a reputation to match, along with a fortune he made years earlier and a wife, Gertrude, who believes in him. At a party at the Chilterns' house, Mrs. Laura Cheveley, an acquaintance from Gertrude's school days, asks Robert to support a bill that would give government money to a canal scheme. She has letters he wrote long ago and uses them to press him. Robert turns to his friend Lord Arthur Goring, who was once engaged to Laura, and Arthur advises him to tell Gertrude the truth. Arthur's father, Lord Caversham, keeps pressing him to marry, while Arthur spends his time with Robert's sister, Mabel.
