Plot summary
Jonathan Fischer, a German writer, has published nothing since his first novel twenty-one years earlier and spends his days in the attic while his wife, Joa, runs the seaside hotel they own. Joa is unhappy with his lack of success and his distance from their daughters, Beth and Posy. Emelia, a rebellious teenage dropout who was raised by her grandparents after her mother died, takes a cleaning job at the hotel and believes herself descended from Arthur Conan Doyle. She befriends Beth, who wants to study medicine at Oxford, and is invited to dinner with the family, where she mentions the novel she is writing. Jonathan offers her lessons in creative writing, held secretly in the attic.
