Biography

James Mason was an English actor who built a following in British cinema before becoming a Hollywood star. Born in Huddersfield, he began on the West End stage and by the early 1940s was playing leading screen roles. He was Britain's top box-office attraction in 1944 and 1945, with The Wicked Lady (1945) and The Seventh Veil (1945) among his successes. He led Odd Man Out (1947), the first film to take the BAFTA prize for best British film. After moving to the United States, he starred in A Star Is Born (1954), which brought him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination. His other films include North by Northwest (1959), Lolita (1962), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Georgy Girl (1966), Heaven Can Wait (1978), The Boys from Brazil (1978) and The Verdict (1982), which earned his third Oscar nomination. He also narrated documentaries about silent film and Chaplin.

    Mason was cast by Alexander Korda in a small part in The Private Life of Don Juan in 1933, but after three days of shooting Korda dismissed him.

    Mason played Norman Maine, a fading screen actor and the leading man of Judy Garland, in A Star Is Born (1954), the musical drama directed by George Cukor. He accepted the part after Cary Grant turned it down.
