Plot summary
Jean Valjean is released from a prison labor camp after nineteen years for stealing food. No one will give a convict a bed for the night, and Bishop Myriel takes him in. Years afterward Valjean owns a factory and serves as the mayor of a town. Inspector Javert, a former guard at the prison where Valjean was held, arrives there. Fantine, a single mother, works in Valjean's factory. Her manager dismisses her once he learns she has a child born outside marriage.
