Plot summary
Roper, a meticulous insurance assessor, travels to Brighton after a car leaves the cliff road east of the town and burns. The driver had recently taken out a large life insurance policy, and the insurance company is suspicious. The car is recovered from the water, but nobody is inside. Roper and Inspector Wright have to decide what the case is: an accident, a fraudulent claim or a killing. The driver's wife, who stands to gain from the policy, his business partner, who is short of money, and the man who sold him the policy and is drawn to the wife all come under scrutiny.
