Plot summary

On the 1930s radio program Manhattan Mystery Theater, Larry Abbot and Vickie Pearle are a popular pair about to be married. For weeks Larry has stammered, forgotten lines and felt afraid, and the ratings have slipped. The sponsor and producers bring in his uncle, the psychologist Dr. Paul Abbot, who believes the coming wedding has stirred something in Larry's mind and intends to cure him with a bigger fright. Larry brings Vickie to the castle-like mansion where he spent his childhood, which belongs to his great-aunt Kate, for a family weekend before the wedding. The guests include his uncles Francis Sr. and Paul, his cousins Charles, Nora and Susan, Sylvia, his former girlfriend, now with Charles, and Montego the magician, Susan's husband. Cousin Francis Jr. is expected but has not come.

  • Dom DeLuise won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress for his performance in the film, which he played in drag.
  • Gilda Radner later called the film "a bomb" in her autobiography, noting it got a month of publicity but played in theaters for only a week.
  • Distributor Orion Pictures skipped advance critics' screenings for the film entirely, with producer Susan Ruskin arguing that critics had grown too "vicious" toward movies and that audiences should judge the film for themselves.
  • Radner wears a wedding gown in 95% of the movie, and because she had not worn one when she and Gene married, she asked the film's own photographer to make her a real wedding album.
  • The film turned out to be both Gilda Radner's last feature film and Gene Wilder's last time directing a movie.
  • Gilda Radner pushed to play the fiancée herself rather than let another actress take it, saying, "I couldn't imagine him singing it with any other girl", and that she got the part with "not a big tantrum, just a tiny tantrum".
  • Gene Wilder wrote the film's opening scene years before the picture was made, back in 1976, while he was filming Silver Streak.
