Plot summary
Shortly after the Second World War, Max Tooney, a New Orleans-born musician, carries his Conn trumpet into a music shop to sell it. The shopkeeper recognizes the melody Max plays, having found it on a record matrix recovered from a piano salvaged off a ship, and asks who wrote it. Max tells of a baby found on 1 January 1900 in the Virginian's first class dining room. The four-stack ocean liner's crew includes Danny Boodman, a coal-man in the boiler room, who raises the boy as his own. The boy takes the name Danny Boodman T. D. Lemon 1900, drawn from the man, the fruit crate he was found in and the year. Never taught, the boy plays the piano, and as he grows he joins the ship's orchestra, where Max meets him in 1927.
