Plot summary
Children at play on Hampstead Heath find a young woman stabbed to death. A handkerchief monogrammed with an S leads Superintendent Robert Hazard and Inspector Phil Learoyd to name her as Sapphire Robbins, a music student. Her fiance, David Harris, an architecture student, says he was in Cambridge when she was killed. An autopsy finds that Sapphire was three months pregnant. Her brother, Dr. Robbins, a doctor in Birmingham, arrives; he and his sister were mixed race, and Sapphire had passed as white.
