Biography

Mel Gibson is an American actor and filmmaker whose career took off after he trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. Born in Peekskill, New York, he moved to Australia as a child. He first gained attention as Max Rockatansky in Mad Max (1979) and later played Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon (1987). Peter Weir cast him in Gallipoli (1981), which brought him an Australian Film Institute award for Best Actor. He became known for action hero roles and later appeared in dramas such as Hamlet (1990) and comedies like Maverick (1994). In 1995 he produced, directed, and starred in Braveheart, winning Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture. He went on to direct The Passion of the Christ (2004) and Apocalypto (2006). Other acting credits include What Women Want (2000), Signs (2002), and Payback (1999). He directed Hacksaw Ridge (2016), which won two Academy Awards.
