Plot summary
An unlicensed doctor patches up Porter, a career thief and former Marine, after a shooting. Porter and his partner Val Resnick had taken $140,000 in a robbery, and Val carried the money to the Outfit, a powerful crime syndicate, to settle a debt. Val told Porter's wife Lynn that Porter was involved with Rosie, a call girl Porter once protected, and Lynn fired the shot. Months of recuperation follow. To equip himself, Porter turns to small thefts and cons for money, a suit and a gun. He then goes looking for an associate of Val's.

- During post-production on Payback, Mel Gibson and the producers removed writer-director Brian Helgeland, rewriting and reshooting substantial portions of the film, including a different third act and a new villain played by Kris Kristofferson.
- Terry Hayes was brought in to rewrite the script of Payback, and Paul Abascal, not production designer John Myhre, as some sources claimed, directed the reshoots, which replaced 30% of the film.
- Mel Gibson said it would have been ideal to shoot Payback in black and white, but noted audiences want a color image, so the film used a bleach bypass process to tint it.
- A scene between Porter and Lynn that arguably involved spousal abuse was excised from Payback, and after 10 days of reshoots a new opening scene and voiceover track were added.
- Dan Houser and James Worrall cited Payback as a primary influence in creating the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto III.
