Plot summary
In 1968, Justin McLeod has lived alone and painted for seven years, ever since a car accident disfigured his face. The town knows little about him. Chuck Norstadt, whose mother and academically brilliant sisters argue with him at home, has failed the entrance exam for a military academy. On a ferry, McLeod catches the boy in an act of vandalism, and when Chuck learns he once taught, he talks him into tutoring him. Chuck keeps the lessons secret, since being seen with the disfigured recluse would cost him. McLeod begins preparing him for the exam.

- Mel Gibson disliked Isabelle Holland's 1972 novel over its implied sexual contact between the tutor McLeod and the boy Chuck, and the film dropped it: he said of the book's character, "the guy did it," adding that he wanted to say something more positive.
- An Internet rumor falsely attributed to radio commentator Paul Harvey claimed the film was based on an actual incident that happened to Gibson as a young man; it circulated around The Patriot and The Passion of the Christ and proved false.
