Plot summary
Noah, a teenager who wants to be a journalist, spends the summer of 1997 on Martha's Vineyard with Sammy, Eugene and Ben. His widowed mother, Abby, runs a bed-and-breakfast where they live. Then island children start to vanish, and they come back the next day unable to speak. When something drags Ben under the water and leaves him spiritless, a young witness describes a cackling witch, and Noah decides to investigate. Since the police and the town newspaper editor will not take him seriously, he asks Gene Carruthers, a retired detective who lives alone, for help. Gene doubts Noah's fairy-tale theories at first and says he believes only in real monsters.
