Darlene Love
Biography
Born in Los Angeles, Darlene Love is an American singer and actress whose career spans 1960s session work, Broadway and film. She sang with the Blossoms, and in 1962 producer Phil Spector gave her the stage name Darlene Love and had her record He's a Rebel, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 while credited to the Crystals. Her other recordings include Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), her signature song, which she performed on David Letterman's late night holiday shows from 1986 onward; Letterman called her the Christmas Queen. In film she played Trish Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon series and later appeared in Holiday Rush (2019) and The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two (2020). On Broadway she took roles in Grease, Carrie and Hairspray. She entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, and the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom (2013) earned her a Grammy.

Spector had Love sing "Da Doo Ron Ron" in the studio, but at the last minute he chose to record the song with a different singer.
Big break
Darlene Love was brought in to record "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" because Ronnie Spector, for whom it was written, could not put enough emotion into it; it became Love's signature tune.
About the name
Phil Spector renamed Darlene Wright as Darlene Love after she signed with him following the release of "He's a Rebel".
A change of course
While working as a maid in Beverly Hills, Darlene Love heard her own song "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" on the radio and took it as a sign to return to singing.
A first
Love got another opportunity in 1986, when David Letterman's Christmas show invited her to perform "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)". That appearance turned into a tradition repeated every year.

In 1998, Love published her autobiography, My Name Is Love, which she wrote with Rob Hoerburger, a New York Times editor and writer.
