Plot summary
Walter Black runs Jerry Co., the toy company he inherited from his father, and it is near bankruptcy. Depressed and sleeping through his days, he has tried therapy and has been kicked out of the house by his wife Meredith, an engineer. Their elder son Porter earns money writing school papers for other students, wants his parents to divorce, and tries to erase any resemblance to his father; younger son Henry is a loner who gets picked on. From a dumpster Walter takes a beaver hand puppet, and with his therapist's support he begins to speak as the beaver, a third-person voice for himself that lets him function again at the office and at home. Porter finds the puppet embarrassing. Norah, a popular classmate headed for valedictorian, hires Porter to write her graduation speech.
