Plot summary
On a farm near North Peak, Alaska, Chris Cringle and his wife Ruth run a workshop that makes Christmas presents, and the business has been losing money for years as children grow more vicious. The United States government holds a share in the operation because Christmas drives the economy, and it wants to cut its subsidies. Captain Jacobs arrives with a proposal: a two-month military contract to produce components for jet fighters. Chris refuses, then accepts it once, after Ruth lifts his spirits. Billy Wenan, a vicious boy who lives with his ailing grandmother, receives a lump of coal on Christmas Eve. He swears revenge and hires his hit man, Jonathan Miller, who carries a grudge against Chris from his own unhappy childhood. Miller sets out.
