Plot summary
Bret Maverick makes his living at cards, and he would rather talk his way out of trouble than reach for a gun. He has his eye on a five-card draw tournament aboard the paddle steamer Lauren Belle, where the entry costs $25,000 and the winner takes the whole pot. Short $3,000, he rides to Crystal River to call in debts and win at the tables. There he beats the ill-tempered gambler Angel and crosses paths with Annabelle Bransford, a young con artist. Maverick and Bransford leave town in a stagecoach shared with Marshal Zane Cooper, all three bound for the riverboat and the game.

- Danny Glover's cameo references Donner's Lethal Weapon film series starring Glover and Gibson as cop partners: their meeting in Maverick has them share a moment of recognition, complete with Lethal Weapon music, and as he leaves Glover says Roger Murtaugh's catchphrase, "I'm too old for this shit."
- The artificial smoke released by the boat's chimney was considered to violate air-quality laws in Washington and Oregon, and required approval before the scenes' scheduled filming date in September 1993.
- Margot Kidder had been Garner's co-star and onscreen love interest in the short-lived Western television series Nichols, reflected in their meeting in Maverick when her character quickly hints that his character might want to marry her.
- Garner wrote in his memoirs that Richard Donner originally wanted Paul Newman to play Zane Cooper in Maverick, but that Newman was not interested in the part.
- The steamboat used in the film, dubbed the Lauren Belle, was the Portland, the last remaining sternwheel tugboat in the United States, which at the time belonged to the Oregon Maritime Museum in Portland.
- The soundtrack album included an all-star rendition of "Amazing Grace", and all royalties from that track were donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
- The film's pinball machine tie-in was the last game to be released under the Data East name, with the company being sold to Sega and rebranded as Sega Pinball near the end of the game's production.
