Plot summary
Stark, a defense contractor, offers a covert job to James Becker, a former marine grief-stricken over his wife's death and drinking himself to sleep at her grave. At a government base the agent Hank Burns sizes him up with open doubt, and the mission is laid out: the CIA wants to supply the Nicaraguan Contras and to undercut the Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, who has offered a Russian helicopter if the Americans deposit money in a Swiss account. Becker enters Panama as a casino consultant, but the deal's broker, Enrique Rodriguez, keeps him waiting while he runs a household of fiancées and cocaine. Becker also meets Brooklyn Rivera, who brings him to a Contra leader, and he grows close to Camila. Enrique turns the helicopter deal into a wager on a jungle dirt-bike race.
