Plot summary
Jerry Fletcher drives a taxi and shares conspiracy theories with anyone. His favorite audience is Alice Sutton, a Justice Department lawyer who tolerates him because he once rescued her from a mugging, unaware that he watches her at home. One day Jerry spots men he takes for CIA agents and is lured into a trap. They take him to a man who says he knows him, inject him with LSD, and demand to know whom he has told about them. Hallucinating, Jerry bites the man's nose and escapes, but the wheelchair he is strapped to falls down stairs and a metal rod goes into his abdomen. He confronts Alice in the Justice Department lobby, grabs a guard's gun, and is arrested. In the hospital, he asks Alice to swap his chart with another patient's, saying he will die by morning.

The horse farm scenes were shot at Lionshare Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut, which belongs to United States Equestrian Team member Peter Leone. Leone coached Julia Roberts himself for the closing sequence in which she gallops across a field.
