Plot summary
In 1939, test pilot Daniel McCormick flies for the Army Air Corps, and a flight in a prototype B-25 Mitchell bomber ends in a crash landing in Northern California. His friend the scientist Harry Finley has built a chamber for cryonic freezing. The next day Helen, the woman McCormick intends to marry, falls into a coma after an automobile accident, and doctors doubt she will recover. Unwilling to watch her die, McCormick insists on being frozen for a year. In 1992, Nat Cooper, ten years old, plays in a military storage warehouse with his friend Felix, and they set the chamber going by accident, waking McCormick and leaving the boy's coat behind. Officers dismiss McCormick as crazed, so he uses the address written in the coat to find his way to Nat.

- In November 1990, Warner Bros. Pictures bought the film rights to "The Rest of Daniel" for $2 million, the most that had ever been paid for a screenplay.
- Mel Gibson slipped and dislocated his shoulder during filming without immediately realizing how bad it was; after he became dizzy and struggled to remember his lines a chiropractor reset the shoulder, and Gibson later said forgetting his lines troubled him more than the pain.
- Gibson had praised Abrams' previous script, which was made into the film Regarding Henry; he had wanted that lead role himself, but it went to Harrison Ford, so he insisted on seeing Abrams' next film script.
- The song Wood sings to the girl in the tree house was originally going to be a different one, which director Steve Miner said would have been very expensive to use, whereas the song finally used was already freely available in the public domain.
- A North American B-25J Mitchell known as "Photo Fanny", from the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California, features prominently in the film, both as the B-25 prototype and later as the restored warbird McCormick flies.
- Gibson had to spend two hours each day having the latex aging make-up applied so that he would appear as an 80-year-old on screen.
- A Hollywood premiere was turned into a fund-raiser for two of Gibson's charities, the West Hollywood Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center and the Santa Monica Homeless Drop-in Center, raising $70,000 for the pair.
