Plot summary
Emma Craven comes home to Boston to visit her father, homicide detective Thomas Craven. She falls ill, vomiting and bleeding from the nose, and as he drives her to a hospital a masked gunman calls Craven's name and fires a shotgun into the car, killing her. Craven, who raised Emma alone, identifies the body, keeps a lock of her hair, and goes back to work. He finds her .45 pistol, and tracing the weapon leads him to David, her boyfriend, who works with her at Northmoor, a weapons company, and who will not talk about it. Craven then visits Northmoor's chief executive, Jack Bennett, who says only that the company is developing clean nuclear energy.

- Robert De Niro had been cast in the role of Jedburgh but walked out shortly after he arrived to begin shooting, with a publicist for the actor citing "creative differences".
- Classical composer John Corigliano wrote the film's original score, but the decision was taken during post-production, after his score had already been recorded and dubbed, to replace it with a new one by Howard Shore.
- The film marked Gibson's first starring role since 2002's We Were Soldiers and Signs, after time spent directing and an involuntary hiatus following a controversial 2006 alcohol fueled incident; he attended a gun club with two policemen to improve his marksmanship for the part.
- Campbell moved the story from England, where the television series was set, to America, saying "Boston seemed like the perfect location, because it does have a whole English, Irish signature on it."
- The film grossed $81 million against its $80 million production budget, a margin so thin that it was still counted as a box-office bomb.
- The production used a real Cold War relic as a location: the Notch Cold War Bunker stood in for the main entrance of the fictional Northmoor facility.
