Plot summary
Jack falls down the stairs the night Sarah goes into labor and wakes in a hospital to learn that his wife has died and he has a daughter. Grief-stricken, he turns to drink and hands the baby to his parents and Sarah's mother to raise. His father leaves the child in bed beside him one morning, and Jack, who names her Sarah after her mother, becomes a devoted father. Juggling the baby, the building work and his job, he brings in a homeless man he had befriended, William, to help around the house. Interviews for a live-in nanny turn up only cold or strange applicants, until Jack meets Amy, an American waitress, during an outing with the baby.
