Plot summary
A dwarf thief named Mulch Diggums is caught at Fowl Manor, where stolen relics have been connected to the wealthy Artemis Fowl I. Questioned by British intelligence, Mulch says he can show that magic is real and begins the account of Artemis Fowl II. Three days before, twelve-year-old Artemis lives at the manor with his father, who goes missing from his boat and is blamed for artifacts found on board. A hooded figure, holding the older Fowl captive, orders the boy to bring back the Aculos. Domovoi Butler, the family's bodyguard, takes him to a library hidden in the manor, where earlier generations of Fowls recorded evidence of magical creatures. Far below, in Haven City, the fairy officer Holly Short and the Lower Elements Police learn that an unlisted creature has reached the surface.

- Lara McDonnell's casting as Holly Short brought accusations of whitewashing, since the books describe the character as having dark nut-brown skin, and Nonso Anozie's casting as Butler was criticized as embodying the "scary black man" and "black servant" tropes.
- Miramax bought the film rights in 2000, before Eoin Colfer's novel was published, and the project then sat in development hell for years, partly because of a rights dispute between Disney and Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
