Plot summary
As a boy, Quoyle is tossed into a lake by his father and nearly drowns, and the memory returns when he is under strain. He works as an ink setter at a paper in Poughkeepsie, New York, and marries Petal, a lively local woman who is unfaithful and negligent with their six-year-old daughter, Bunny. After his parents die, his aunt, Agnis Hamm, arrives, bound for the family's ancestral house in Newfoundland, which has been empty for decades. She persuades Quoyle to bring Bunny and come along.
