Plot summary
In 1937 the playwright Charles Condomine, once successful, cannot write anything new, and the strain has reached his five-year marriage to Ruth. A public performance by the popular medium Madame Arcati ends in embarrassment, so she holds a private sitting at the Condomine house as a publicity act. It produces Elvira, Charles's first wife, who died seven years before. Only Charles can see her, and she is not pleased to find Ruth in her place. With the two wives at odds and Ruth unable to see her rival, Charles has to keep the peace in a household that now holds three people.
