Plot summary
In 1889, the cattle rustler Alameda Slim, wanted by law, empties the Dixon Ranch of its herd, all but one show cow, Maggie. Her owner, Abner Dixon, sells her to Pearl Gesner, who runs a small dairy farm called Patch of Heaven. Sheriff Sam Brown arrives with word that Pearl must repay the bank within three days or the farm goes to the highest bidder. Maggie talks the farm's other cows, Grace and Mrs. Calloway, into going with her to town to win a prize at the fair. There they learn that the bounty offered for Slim would cover Pearl's debt, and the three cows decide to go after him.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- In October 2000, Disney removed director Mike Gabriel and co-director Mike Giaimo from the film over persistent story problems; Will Finn, who had just co-directed The Road to El Dorado at DreamWorks, and John Sanford were hired as the new directors.
- The film's story was once a supernatural western inspired by the song "Ghost Riders in the Sky", about a timid cowboy who visits a ghost town and confronts an undead cattle rustler named Slim, who with the Willies rode ghost herds through the clouds and drove livestock off cliffs.
- Randy Quaid did his own singing for the villain song "Yodel-Adle-Eedle-Idle-Oo", including the consonants in the yodels, but the vowel sounds were overdubbed by ghost singers Randy Erwin and Kerry Christensen, two world champion yodelers.
- Sarah Jessica Parker was originally set to voice the character Pearl Gesner, but she was rewritten into an elderly woman instead.
- Alan Menken composed the song "Will the Sun Ever Shine Again" in reaction to the September 11 attacks, and Bonnie Raitt performed it.
