Plot summary
Raised in the convent of St. Ursula, Sophia leaves when the wealthy spice merchant Cornelis Sandvoort proposes marriage, a match that also gives her sisters the dowry they need to emigrate to New Amsterdam. Three years on, the marriage has produced no heir, and Cornelis wants a double portrait that will show him with a beautiful young wife beside him. The painter Jan Van Loos arrives at the house to stage the picture, and the sessions leave him and Sophia longing for each other. Sophia's maid Maria is courted by Willem Brok, a fishmonger who sells his business to trade in tulip bulbs.

- The film was originally planned for 2004 on a $48 million budget, with Jude Law, Keira Knightley and Jim Broadbent as lead actors, John Madden as director and Steven Spielberg producing through DreamWorks, but production was halted days before filming was scheduled to start because of changes in UK film tax rules.
- Cara Delevingne said the real reason for her casting was that producer Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed her, attempted to kiss her without consent and propositioned her for a threesome in a hotel room in exchange for a role; she declined, was cast anyway, and said she regretted it.
- To recreate 17th-century Amsterdam the production took over a wing of Cobham Hall, a school in Gravesend, Kent, and built the waterway from scratch, complete with barges and donkeys crossing humpback bridges.
- Tulip Fever was the last film to be theatrically released by The Weinstein Company, which filed for bankruptcy following a series of sexual assault cases against co-founder Harvey Weinstein.
- Harvey Weinstein offered Harry Styles the role of Mattheus, but the singer turned it down due to scheduling conflicts and Matthew Morrison was cast instead.
