Plot summary
Nine-year-old Buddy lives in Belfast with Ma, his older brother Will, and his grandparents Granny and Pop, while Pa, his father, works in England. In August 1969, Protestant loyalists attack Catholic homes and businesses on the street, and the residents put up a barricade. Pa comes back to check on the family. At church, the minister speaks of a fork in the road facing the congregation. Buddy takes an interest in Catherine, a Catholic classmate. Billy Clanton, a local criminal, demands that Pa join the cause and turns aggressive when Pa refuses. The family is behind on its tax bill, and Pa talks of emigrating to Sydney or Vancouver, which distresses Ma.
