Plot summary
At the Bethlehem, a geriatric hospital in Wakefield known as the Beth, NHS funding cuts have put its future in doubt. Its head nurse, Sister Alma Gilpin, is due to be honored with a concert and a medal for her service, and a local television crew from Pennine People is invited in to record the volunteer campaign to keep the place open. Colin Colman, a consultant to the Health Secretary whose father Joe is a patient, arrives to assess the hospital, having once recommended its closure. Dr Valentine, the resident doctor, looks after the residents, among them the former librarian Mary Moss.
