Plot summary
Jake Portman leads an ordinary life in Florida until the night he finds his grandfather Abe dying near his ransacked house, after years of stories about monsters and a Welsh home for children with unusual abilities. His therapist urges him to travel to Cairnholm, the island off Wales where Abe grew up. Jake and his father Frank find only ruins until Jake meets the children themselves: Emma, who manipulates air and wears lead shoes so she will not float away; Olive, who can make fire; Hugh, who has bees living inside him; Millard, the invisible boy; and Enoch, who brings the dead briefly back to life. Miss Peregrine, their headmistress, explains that they live inside a time loop set on the day in 1943 when German bombers struck the house, keeping them hidden from the outside world.
