Plot summary
The Whitechapel killings reach Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in the form of a parcel holding surgical instruments, with the scalpel gone. A family crest on the case leads them to the Duke of Shires, whose elder son, Michael Osborne, had hoped to become a doctor. The Duke's younger son, Edward, Lord Carfax, says Michael has vanished. The pawnbroker Joseph Beck remembers an Angela Osborne leaving the instruments with him and giving the address of a soup kitchen run by Doctor Murray. Inspector Lestrade lets the pair view the body of the latest victim, and Holmes, while Watson makes a fuss at the soup kitchen, follows Murray's niece, Sally, to a meeting with Carfax.
