Plot summary
William Shakespeare, 49, comes home to Stratford-upon-Avon after the Globe Theatre burns down during a performance, having spent most of his marriage in London. Anne, his wife, cannot read or write, and the two have grown distant since their son Hamnet died at eleven. Their elder daughter Susanna is married to John Hall, a prominent Puritan doctor, and must live by his moral codes. Judith, Hamnet's twin, has had no education, has refused to marry, and resents a father who loved her dead brother more than her. Shakespeare turns to the family garden, where his efforts do not go well.
