Plot summary
Zeebad, an evil sorcerer, breaks out of an ancient prison and sets out to take revenge by deep-freezing the earth. Three magic diamonds, joined in the wrong hands, can make a force strong enough to freeze the sun, and he means to collect all three. Doogal, a dog with a taste for candy, leads his friends Dylan, Brian and Ermintrude on a race to find the diamonds first. The friends cross icy mountains, molten lava and vast oceans on the way, then enter a temple rigged with traps and held by skeletal warriors, with Zeebad working against them the whole way.

- In 2017, Butch Hartman, writer and executive producer of the American version, revealed that the film was originally meant to include a live-action segment similar to The Princess Bride, but it was dropped because of budget cuts and replaced by Judi Dench's narration.
- Butch Hartman said that only 3% of his original script survived into the final cut, after Harvey Weinstein and The Weinstein Company had it rewritten without his consent, with a script by Cory Edwards, co-director of La Véritable Histoire du Petit Chaperon rouge.
- The American distributor Harvey Weinstein, judging the English voices unsuited to American audiences, had most of the roles re-recorded by other actors and gave the dialogue rewrite and the re-edit to the makers of La Véritable Histoire du Petit Chaperon rouge.
