Plot summary
Sheila Page is a celebrated Broadway actress, and 1946 has been a bad year: her husband, the playwright Barney Page, has not written since her first hit five years ago, and drink has taken over. On New Year's Eve she confides in her poet friend William Williams and wishes she could live the year over. The wish is granted, and she finds herself back on January 1, 1946. She turns down the London play Saying Goodbye, warns William against Eloise Shaw, and tries to keep Barney away from the playwright Paula Costello. Paula appears anyway, and Barney and Sheila quarrel. Barney leaves to go out drinking, and the next morning returns home drunk.

- Jules Dassin was once in mind to direct Repeat Performance, with Franchot Tone and Constance Dowling tapped for the leads; Dowling was then dropped in favour of Sylvia Sidney. All of those considerations were scrapped for director Alfred L. Werker and stars Joan Leslie and Louis Hayward.
- The film reversed the source story, in which Barney kills his lover before reliving the previous year and Sheila is a drunk. The change was reportedly made because of a perception that Joan Leslie could not play a villain.
- A 2007 screening with cast member Joan Leslie led to the discovery that a 35mm print of Repeat Performance had badly decomposed. The UCLA Film and Television Archive and other bodies then restored the film.
