Plot summary
George Dumurrier runs a San Francisco clinic with his younger brother Henry, while the care of his asthmatic wife Susan falls to her sister Martha and a nurse. George is involved with Jane, a photographer's assistant who loves him and is fatalistic about their future. The two travel to Reno, where Henry phones with news that Susan has died in a violent asthma attack. Martha freezes George out at home, but Susan's $1 million life insurance policy suits his extended business. An insurance agent tails him, learns of the affair, and brings his suspicions to Inspector Wald. A tip then sends George and Jane to a strip club, where a blonde stripper, Monica, looks strikingly like Susan.
