Plot summary
Two masked men in a truck wait outside a rural Colorado home until the children have gone inside, then kill Orville Beecham's three wives and their children. The police suspect a religious motive. Orville says nothing, and is held in a local jail for his own protection. Denver newspaper reporter Garret Smith is at lunch with police chief Barney Doyle and businessman Homer Foxx when word of the massacre arrives. He writes the story and persuades Orville to help him. Orville's father, Willis, leads a polygamous sect from a compound and blames his alienated brother, Zenas, with whom he argues over doctrine. A local editor, Jastra Watson, aids Garret's investigation.
