Joanne Dru

Biography

Joanne Dru was an American actress who moved from Logan, West Virginia, to New York City in 1940 at eighteen and worked as a model before Al Jolson cast her in the Broadway show Hold On to Your Hats. After relocating to Hollywood, she appeared in theater and landed her first film role in Abie's Irish Rose (1946). She appeared often in westerns, including Howard Hawks's Red River (1948), and John Ford's She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Wagon Master (1950). Her performance in All the King's Men (1949), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, was well received. She also appeared in 711 Ocean Drive (1950), The Pride of St. Louis (1952), Thunder Bay (1953), and the Martin and Lewis comedy 3 Ring Circus (1954). Her film career had slowed by the late 1950s, but she worked often in television, notably as Babs Hooten on Guestward, Ho!, and received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
