Biography

Jeff Corey was an American actor, television director, and acting teacher who became one of Hollywood's most influential coaches. Born Arthur Zwerling in Brooklyn, he acted on the New York stage in the 1930s and made his film debut in 1937. After freelancing in small everyman roles and working regularly at 20th Century-Fox, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He resumed screen work in 1946 and appeared in The Adventures of Philip Marlowe on radio. In the 1950s his acting career stalled, and he began teaching; students included Kirk Douglas, Jack Nicholson, Jane Fonda, and Leonard Nimoy. Corey returned to films in 1962 and played character roles in The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Seconds (1966), True Grit (1969), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Little Big Man (1970), and Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). He also worked often in television and received an Emmy nomination for Night Gallery.

    Corey's first professional stage role came in Leslie Howard's 1936 Hamlet, where he played a spear-carrier and served as understudy for Rosencrantz.

  2. About the name

    Corey began making films in 1937. That year, on his agent's suggestion, he stopped going by Arthur Zwerling and adopted a new name.

  3. Behind the camera

    For Superman (1978), Corey took on directing duties for some screen tests, which later turned up among the DVD extras, and he also portrayed Lex Luthor in several tryouts.
