Plot summary
Jim Carey, a horse breeder, joins a card game in a cantina back room in Mexicali with the cowboys Shep and Johnny, the prospector Old Willy, a stranger named Frazee and a drifter called Chalk. The talk turns to a wagon train that carried five million dollars in gold bars and was lost a hundred years ago in the Walking Hills, a stretch of shifting dunes across the border. Johnny mentions that his horse lately tripped on a wagon wheel out in the dunes. So that the find stays quiet, everyone at the table, including Jim's man Cleve, agrees to ride out together. At the dunes nothing matches what Johnny remembers, and the diggers are joined by Chris Jackson, a diner worker from Calexico who followed them.
