Plot summary
Clara Calhoun runs a New York beauty shop that is a front for an illegal bookmaking operation. Closing for the night, she signals two masked gunmen waiting outside; they burst in on her and her assistant, Marie Weston, and take the betting money. A patrolman hears Weston's screams and tries to stop the holdup; he is shot, and the robbers escape in a laundry truck. The detectives on the case, Mickey Ferguson and Jim Chubb, question both women. Calhoun says one robber, the one who fired, had sandy hair, while Weston remembers two dark-haired men. Steve Ryan, who drives the laundry truck, is picked up after a scarf of his is found at the shop, and his sister Rosie is certain he is innocent. She pleads his case to Ferguson, who is convinced of his guilt.
