Plot summary
Wyatt Earp rides into Fort Griffin, Texas, to take Ike Clanton and Johnny Ringo into custody, only to find that the local sheriff has already released them. Doc Holliday, a gambler with tuberculosis, refuses to help, owing to an old grudge involving Wyatt's brother Morgan. In Dodge City, Kansas, Wyatt lets Holliday stay on the condition that he keeps out of fights, and deputizes him when a bank robbery leaves him short of men. Wyatt meets Laura Denbow, a gambler arrested for playing cards in a hall where women are barred. When his brother Virgil asks for help cleaning up Tombstone, Arizona, Wyatt goes without Laura; Holliday follows. There the Earps' control of the railway station blocks the cattle Ike Clanton wants to ship.

- The real gunfight at the O.K. Corral, on October 26, 1881, lasted less than 30 seconds and took place in a small side street beside the corral, not the open space of the film; the movie version runs about 11 minutes.
- Johnny Ringo, a gunfighter in the film, was not present at the real gunfight at all; the historical Ringo killed himself afterwards.
- In the film Wyatt Earp's brother James is killed in a Tombstone ambush, but the real victim was Wyatt's youngest brother, Morgan, and the ambush took place after the gunfight, not before; Virgil Earp later lost the use of an arm in a trap.
- It was Wyatt Earp's brother Virgil who was the marshal when he reached Tombstone; Wyatt himself had little, if any, legal authority in that jurisdiction at the time.
