Plot summary
Dewey Finn plays guitar in a rock band called No Vacancy, and his on-stage antics get him thrown out of the group. With his rent four months overdue and his roommate Ned Schneebly under pressure to collect it, Dewey answers a phone call meant for Ned about a short-term substitute position at the Horace Green prep school and takes the job under Ned's name. His class of fifth-graders has no idea what to make of him, but Dewey hears their musical talent in a lesson and begins turning them into a band. He hands out roles: Zack on lead guitar, Freddy on drums, Katie on bass, Lawrence on keyboard, and Summer as manager. Rosalie Mullins, the school's principal, expects proper lessons from her substitute. The students' goal is the Battle of the Bands.

- Led Zeppelin have a long history of refusing permission to use their songs on screen, so Linklater shot a video on the stage used at the film's ending in which Jack Black begs the band, with the crowd extras cheering behind him. It went straight to Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, who granted permission.
- Jack Black once witnessed a stage dive gone wrong involving Ian Astbury of the rock band The Cult, and the mishap made its way into the film.
- Black received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, which he lost to Bill Murray for Lost in Translation, and won an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance.

- The school in School of Rock is actually Main Hall at Wagner College in Staten Island; on the DVD commentary the kids say every hallway scene was shot in one hallway, and one of the theaters used was the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway, New Jersey.
