Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The 2014 Sony Pictures hack exposed emails showing Sony had spent years chasing the Mario film rights. Producer Avi Arad flew to Nintendo in Tokyo twice in 2014 and told studio chief Amy Pascal in October that he had closed the deal, then denied any deal had been made once the emails leaked.
  • Sebastian Maniscalco auditioned for Mario himself, impersonating the game voice in the hope that an actor of Italian heritage would play the character. He was given the smaller part of Spike, the brothers' ex-boss from the game Wrecking Crew, as compensation.
  • Chris Pratt did record Mario with an accent at first. Khary Payton described it as a New York Italian guy, a cousin to the Sopranos, and the accent was scrapped for sounding too much like Tony Soprano.
  • Charlie Day first played Luigi with a New York accent modeled on Goodfellas. The directors cut it for sounding too much like the gangster film, and Day answered, "Alright! I think you're wrong, but fine!" The plot was kept secret from the actors, so he recorded lines many different ways.
  • Seth Rogen refused to alter his voice for Donkey Kong, saying he was very clear that he does not do voices and that if they wanted him in the film it would sound like him, and that was the beginning and end of the conversation.
  • Donkey Kong is introduced to the "DK Rap" from Donkey Kong 64, but its composer Grant Kirkhope was left out of the end credits while the licensed songs were credited, an oversight he found disappointing.
  • The Rainbow Road chase was the hardest thing in the film to make: the road itself was a visual effect, so every shot of it had to go through the visual effects department, which was time-consuming and expensive. Head of story Ed Skudder storyboarded the sequence.
  • A pirated copy posted to Twitter on 30 April 2023 was watched by at least nine million users in roughly seven hours before moderators removed it, made possible by a feature letting Twitter Blue subscribers upload hour-long high-quality video.
