Plot summary
Rob Gordon, in his thirties, owns Championship Vinyl, a used record store in Chicago, where Dick and Barry work with him. The three of them compile top five lists and mock the tastes of the few customers who come in. Laura, a lawyer who has shared Rob's home for two years, has just broken up with him. Rob thought she would last, so he leaves her off the top five breakups he draws up, though he admits that some of what he did gave her grounds to go. After Laura's friend Liz confronts him about the split and his mother questions his record with women, Rob sets out to revisit the women on the list and understand why those relationships ended.

- Around 1,000 DVD copies of Toy Story 2's 'Ultimate Toy Box' edition sent to Costco stores had a pressing error that caused a profanity-laden scene from High Fidelity to play in the middle of the Pixar film, prompting Costco to recall and replace the discs.
- The writers never believed they would actually get Bruce Springsteen to appear, and thought putting him in the script would make the studio excited about it; then John Cusack, who knew Springsteen socially, called the musician up and pitched the idea, and Springsteen asked for a script and agreed to do it.
- Jack Black never auditioned for Barry and initially turned the part down until director Stephen Frears talked him into it; the role of Dick was first offered to David Arquette, and Liz Phair was considered for Marie before Lisa Bonet was cast.
- The film was credited with increasing the record sales of the British indie rock group The Beta Band: their song “Dry the Rain” and the compilation album The Three E.P.'s are prominently featured in a scene, and the band's American label Astralwerks reported that sales quadrupled within a month of the film's release in March 2000.
- A writing credit dispute broke out when Scott Rosenberg agreed to take his name off the credits and then refused to do so; according to Pink, Rosenberg kept the credit because of a now-abolished WGA rule giving the first screenwriter on an adaptation full credit for anything extracted from the book.
- Singer-songwriter Regina Spektor was watching High Fidelity when she wrote her song 'Fidelity,' which became her first entry on the Billboard charts in 2006.
