Plot summary
John Callahan is an alcoholic living in Portland. He wakes one morning still drunk and hurries out for more, so that withdrawal will not set in. That evening he goes to a party in Long Beach, where he meets a fellow drinker named Dexter. The two sneak into an amusement park and visit a strip club. When they leave, Dexter insists on driving, and a bystander points out that both of them are too impaired. Dexter falls asleep at the wheel and hits an electrical pole at high speed. John, who was also asleep, wakes in a hospital to learn that he is a quadriplegic. Medical students pass through and discuss patients as though they are not sentient. He connects with Annu, a Swedish physical therapist who treats him.
