Plot summary

After his father's death, Zach Cooper and his mother Gale leave New York City for Madison, Delaware, where Gale is the new vice-principal of the high school. Zach befriends Hannah, the girl next door, and his classmate Champ. Hannah's father orders Zach to stay away from them. Hearing a terrified scream from the house one night, Zach calls the police, but the man convinces them nothing is wrong. Fearing for Hannah, Zach tricks him into leaving and searches the house with Champ. Inside are manuscripts locked shut like books, and one of them, opened, releases a monster. Hannah's father is R. L. Stine, who long ago wrote the Goosebumps stories and has kept their creatures trapped in his pages ever since.
