Plot summary
The Jumanji console turns up in a school storage room, where Spencer Gilpin, Anthony "Fridge" Johnson, Bethany Walker and Martha Kaply are serving detention. They switch it on and the game swallows them, dropping each one into a jungle inside the body of a chosen avatar: Spencer as the archeologist Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Fridge as the zoologist Franklin "Moose" Finbar, Martha as the fighter Ruby Roundhouse and Bethany as the cartographer Dr. Shelly Oberon. Marks on their arms tally their lives in the game. The guide Nigel hands them their quest: Van Pelt has stolen a gem called the Jaguar's Eye, and putting it back in the jaguar statue and calling out Jumanji is the way to finish.

- Jack Black suggested the film's final title, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and the use of the song "Welcome to the Jungle" in the film.
- A planned story had the President of the United States buy Jumanji and bring it to the White House, then get sucked into the game, letting his evil Vice President rise to power as his replacement. Steve Buscemi was supposed to play that Vice President.
- Director Dennis Dugan pitched his own sequel version that would have brought back Robin Williams. When they could not interest Williams, Sony passed on the project and moved on to develop Zathura.
- Online reaction to the film's announcement was negative, with some saying it came too soon after Robin Williams died in August 2014. Bradley Pierce, who played Peter Shepherd in Jumanji, criticized the announcement.
- James Newton Howard was originally signed to compose the score but was replaced by Henry Jackman when the film's release was postponed six months.
- Jack Black and Kevin Hart were paid $5 million and $10 million respectively for their involvement in the film.
- The film passed Spider-Man in April 2018 to become Sony's highest-grossing film domestically, until Spider-Man: No Way Home surpassed it on December 25, 2021.
