Plot summary
The documentary moves through the three cities where Elliott Smith lived during his music career: Portland, New York and Los Angeles. Recorded conversations with Smith, personal photographs and concert footage fill those years, alongside interviews with friends, collaborators and his sister. Five solo albums released between 1994 and 2000 and a 1998 nomination for Best Original Song, for Miss Misery from Good Will Hunting, mark the period. The soundtrack carries at least one song from each album and more than a dozen recordings that had not been released before. No earlier documentary had gained permission to use Smith's music.

- Kevin Moyer, who attended the same high school as Elliott Smith, emailed the filmmakers after their 2011 Kickstarter campaign and joined as producer and music supervisor, arranging most of the interviews.
- Director Nickolas Rossi began contemplating a documentary about Elliott Smith in 2007, after a short tribute video he shot at the Figure 8 wall following Smith's 2003 death drew a positive response.
