Plot summary
Mitchell Goosen, a California teenager who surfs and rollerblades, expects to spend six months in Australia while his zoologist parents take on grant work there. Instead they send him to Cincinnati, Ohio, to finish his high school semester with his aunt, uncle and cousin Wiley. He arrives in a winter storm and finds none of the beach atmosphere he is used to. On his first day of school the hockey players mock his California look and his easygoing ideas. Wiley and Mitchell are asked to fill in during a game against the rival preps, and Mitchell accidentally scores for the other side, cementing Jack's disdain. Mitchell also falls for Nikki.

- Airborne was shot in Cincinnati, Ohio, in winter 1992; the filmmakers had planned to move to snowier Minnesota for the exteriors, but a blizzard in Ohio let them complete all exterior filming within the state.
- Filmmakers brought in professional in-line skaters from Team Rollerblade, who spent twelve days choreographing the skating sequences, performing the onscreen stunts and training the actors in the sport.
