Gene Evans
Biography
Gene Evans was an American actor who specialized in playing tough guys, especially soldiers and lawmen, across a career that ran from 1947 to 1989. He was born in Holbrook, Arizona, and grew up in Colton, California. He started in summer stock right after high school and served in the Army during World War II, performing with a GI theater troupe in Europe. He made his film debut in Under Colorado Skies in 1947 and appeared in dozens of features, including several for Samuel Fuller: The Steel Helmet (1951), Fixed Bayonets!, Hell and High Water, Shock Corridor and Park Row, for which he lost 30 pounds. On television he played Rob McLaughlin on My Friend Flicka from 1956 to 1957 and starred on Spencer's Pilots in 1976. He also appeared on stage in Papa Is All, On Borrowed Time and Love Letters. He died in 1998.

Gene Evans got his breakthrough role in Samuel Fuller's The Steel Helmet after Fuller threw an M1 Garand rifle at him and Evans caught and inspected it like a soldier, having served as an Army engineer in World War II.
